The nation’s oldest, family-owned and operated retailer of sporting goods, sporting apparel, menswear, and brand-name athletic footwear is currently under control of the fourth generation of the Modell family. Founded by Morris Modell, Modell's Sporting Goods has continued to live up to its total customer satisfaction guarantee by combining the convenience of brick and mortar locations with its e-commerce site Modells.com.
Part of maintaining the same commitment to customers that Morris Modell had in mind when he founded the company stems from the company’s belief that to survive in any of its markets, which spread across the Northeast, it must take an interest in its local communities. When it opened its 144th store in Mt. Laurel, NJ in 2008, CEO Mitchell Modell said, “We share a passion for sports with our customers and take interest in the local community. Modell’s will serve our customers’ sporting needs in the best way possible, and we look forward to celebrating both their individual and team achievements along the way.”
Indeed, throughout its history, the company has donated to programs supporting families, youth, education, and physical activity. Company materials state that Modell’s views each customer as a neighbor and strives to improve the quality of life for its communities, get kids more physically active, and have a real, positive, and measurable impact on those it serves through its retail presence.
In 1997, the company established the Team Weeks program as an official way to give back to its communities and has since donated more than $1 million toward helping organizations support their individual causes such as buying new uniforms, building new fields, and minimizing registration and permitting costs.
